What Is the Florida Yard Design and Neighborhood Program?
In May one of our Blogs highlighted the Florida-Friendly Landscaping Program. This month we delve into a part of that program called Florida Yards and Neighborhoods, or FYN for short. The FYN Program is a statewide program created by the University of Florida IFAS Extension, in partnership with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. It promotes landscape practices that are not only attractive and functional—but also environmentally responsible, which encourage efficient use of water, fertilizer, and pesticides, and protects the environment.
Why is FYN Important in the Treasure Coast?
Living in Florida means we’re surrounded by delicate ecosystems—estuaries, wetlands, native wildlife, and miles of coastline. Everything we do in our landscapes can affect these systems, especially when it comes to water use and chemical runoff.
On the Treasure Coast, the FYN principles are especially important because:
We often deal with sandy or mixed soils that drain quickly, which can lead to leaching of fertilizers into groundwater.
Our summer rains and storms can wash excess lawn chemicals into canals, rivers, and ultimately, the ocean.
We're in a region that relies heavily on irrigation, which makes water conservation a top priority.
By following Florida-Friendly principles, we help keep our waterways clean, our wildlife protected, and our community sustainable.
How Homeowners Benefit from FYN
The beauty of this program is that it’s not just good for the environment—it’s good for your lawn and your wallet too. Here’s how:
Save money on water: FYN promotes efficient watering techniques that reduce water bills without sacrificing lawn health.
More effective lawn and ornamental treatments: By applying the principles of the FYN and Florida-Friendly program, you can lower your need for over application of pesticides and fertilizers.
Support local wildlife: Florida-Friendly landscapes attract pollinators like butterflies and bees while discouraging harmful pests.
Boost curb appeal: A well-designed landscape that thrives naturally looks lush and inviting year-round.
Peace of mind: You’ll know your yard isn’t just surviving—it’s thriving in a way that aligns with Florida’s natural rhythms.
Our Role as an FYN-Aware Pest Control Company

We also love helping our clients make plant selections, adjust watering schedules, and build a landscape that looks good and does good.
